5 pocket books from the series Calazo fjällklassiker. All written by Claes Grundsten.
Project overview
Calazo is a small publishing house in Scandinavia, leading in outdoor handbooks, guidebooks and maps. The brand is very well recognized within its’ target audience, with all products following the same design line. This new series of books were to be called  Calazo fjällklassiker. The titles were: På fjälltur Abisko Kebnekaise, På fjälltur Arjeplogsfjällen, På fjälltur Kungsleden, På fjälltur Padjelanta och Sulitelma, På fjälltur Sarek and På fjälltur Vindelfjällen.  All with text by Claes Grundsten.
Objectives
  • The design files should be transferable to e-pub in an efficient and economical way
  • The books should have a design that differed from the rest of the company’s publications, yet showed resemblance.
  • The design idea should be able to be applied to an large number of upcoming titles.
Challenges
  • The design should signal that the book were re prints with no updated data.
  • The design must be different to other earlier publications by other companies.
  • Find a way of using the well known photograper and author’s images on the cover in a creative but respectful way.
Design solutions
  • I created a typographical system that would stand a quick transformation to e-pub.
  • I gave the books the format of a pocket book, to signal that it was to be considered a purely fictional read.
  • The cover images were converted to duo-tone, also that to suggest fiction.
  • The hightened contrast in the images increased the sense of having to do with an iconic read.
